He was raised in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and lived there all his life, except three years spent in Missouri. He was a farmer and carpenter, started in life poor, and, as the result of his own labor and industry, came to own 196 acres of land. He and his brother John supported their mother and her family.
He and his family were members of the Presbyterian church, of which he was a ruling elder. Politically he was a Democrat.
