General Notes: Husband - Michael Keffer

He was born in Germany and in 1800 embarked for the United States, bringing with him his young wife and their eldest son, then an infant less than one year old. The voyage was tedious and tempestuous and it was many weeks before the travellers reached their destination. They settled near Berlin, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where Mr. Keffer purchased a small tract of land. Upon this Mr. Keffer built a two-story log dwelling and for twenty-five years followed his trade, which was that of a shoemaker, also doing a little farming. He eventually sold the property, purchasing a large farm in Ligonier Valley, in Westmoreland County, three miles north of Ligonier. In the spring of 1826 he took possession of this land, making it his home for the remainder of his life. While residing in Somerset County Mr. Keffer became, as the court records show, a naturalized citizen of the United States, and during the War of 1812 he served in the American army. He was a Whig, and a devoted member of the Lutheran church.
