General Notes: Husband - John P. Keefer

He was reared on his father's homestead and attended the public schools until he was fifteen years of age, when he came to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and entered the academy of that city, remaining one year. He then became clerk in a general merchandise store, owned by H. H. Hutz, and so continued until he was twenty-one years of age. He was then made a partner, and the firm continued until after the war, when Mr. Keefer embarked in business for himself, after which time he steadily grew in public favor, until he ranked among the leading merchants of Chambersburg.
In politics, he was a sound Republican, and always supported the platform and candidates of his party, but was too much occupied with his business affairs to seek public office. In religious affiliations he was an earnest member of the Lutheran Church of Chambersburg. of which he was deacon and trustee for many years. His fraternal associations were most pleasant, he being an honored member of the I. O. O. F., and one of the most active supporters of that lodge.
