He was raised on a farm, and attended the public school in Farmington township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. For eight years he was in the lumber woods. In 1902 he came to Clarion township, and settled on a farm of ninety-four acres which he had purchased in the preceding year. He was a Republican, and attended the Methodist Episcopal church.
