General Notes: Husband - Nicholas Mackin

His early life was spent on a farm. He attended the common schools for a time and then took special training in a select school under Professor H. P. Willard, of Booneville, Oneida county, New York. From 1860 to 1865 he taught in Weston, Oneida county. In 1869, after having spent four years as assistant clerk in the Continental hotel, Philadelphia, he came to Pithole, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and has ever since been engaged as an oil producer in Venango, Warren, Clarion, Bradford, and Butler counties, Pennsylvania, and Allegany County, New York. Politically Mr. Mackin always acted with the Democratic party, his first vote having been cast for Stephen A. Douglas in 1860. On the 10th of December, 1888, he was appointed postmaster of Emlenton by President Cleveland, but the senate failing to approve the appointment, he never held the position. He had strong testimonials from Governors A. G. Curtin and Horatio Seymour as to his personal worth and ability. Mr. Mackin was always a strong friend and advocate of education, and both he and wife were members of the Catholic church. [HVC 1890, 947]

Nicholas Mackin, Former Burgess, Dies at Age 92 Years
Nicholas Mackin, aged 92, died at his home on Main st., Emlenton, this morning at a few minutes past 1 o'clock. His illness started about two weeks ago with an attack of influenza which later became pneumonia from which he had not the strength to rally resulted fatally.
He leaves one sister, Miss Rose Mackin, of Ithaca, N. Y.; one step daughter, Miss Anna Moran, who in her youth became a religieuse and joined the order of the Sisters of Mercy. She has since been known as Sister M. Margaret. The branch with which she is now connected is located at Washington, Pa. Since the serious illness of Mr. Mackin she has been in Emlenton, untiring in her devotion to him.
The greater part of Mr. Mackin's life was spent in Emlenton where after his marriage to Mrs. Cecelia Moran he engaged in the hotel business. He was for some years burgess of Emlenton and up to his fatal sickness was able to attend to his duties as notary public.
He was a devoted member of St. Michaels church, walking up the hill to its varied services with unfailing regularity.
Having been a teacher in his youth he never lost his interest in educational affairs so in later life he visited the different grades in the Emlenton schools, making short addresses to which the students listened with gratifying attention.
A staunch Democrat he found exercise for his oratorical powers during various Presidential campaigns. His last public appearance as a speaker was at the dedication exercises of the Elizabeth Crawford Memorial school building Friday afternoon, December 21 in the new auditorium.
