On August 6, 1862, he enlisted in Company G, One Hundred and Thirty-fourth Pennsylvania Volunteers, under the command of Col. M. S. Quay, the regiment forming part of Humphrey's Division, Army of the Potomac. He did good service at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and followed the fortunes of his regiment down to May 24, 1863, when he was honorably discharged from service.
