He was reared and educated in Scrubgrass town­ship, Venango County, PA, and always followed farming. He was drafted in 1862 and served nine months. He was an ardent Prohibitionist, a member of the G. A. R. and A. O. U. W., and belonged to the Methodist church of Clintonville.
