In 1896 he was graduated from Washington and Jefferson College. He studied law in his father's office and was admitted to the bar Sept. 3, 1900.

He and his wife were members of the First Presbyterian Church. He was one of the organizers and was a member of the exclusive Bassett Club and was a Freemason. At different times he served as secretary and treasurer of the Democratic County Committee.
