General Notes: Husband - John Smathers

Like his father and grandfather, he became a farmer.
In 1853 he settled on a farm in Oliver township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, which was sold in 1864, and one bought in Ringold township, which remained the family homestead for many years.

He and his wife settled in Jefferson County in 1852, making a permanent home there. He was a farmer and stock dealer, buying stock extensively all over the county, and was well known in his day. He died and his widow continued to reside on the homestead until her death. [HJC 1917 ii, 50]

He and his wife had a large family of children, many of whom died in infancy. Five reached mature years.

Although he started out in life for himself in limited circumstances, by industry, economy and good business ability he became one of the most extensive farmers and stock dealers of Jefferson County, where he located in 1853. For a few years he resided in Oliver township, and then removed to a farm in Ringgold township. He gave each of his children a large and valuable farm, or its equivalent, all of which property he had acquired through his own unaided efforts and good management. He was a firm supporter of the Democratic party, and an active and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
