He was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and attended the country schools of his vicinity. He was reared on the farm and performed the usual duties of agricultural life.
After his marriage he located on a farm in Hanover township, Washington County, adjoining the Beaver County line, where he then resided, following farming and stock raising. He also dealt in agricultural implements. In politics he was an enthusiastic Republican.
