General Notes: Husband - Col. James Johnston

These Johnstons were descendants of the celebrated Johnstons of Dumfrieshire, Scotland.

He was of Scotch-Irish origin, and a colonel in the English army, who came to America about 1700, and obtained from the government a large body of land partly in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and partly in the state of Maryland adjoining, on which he erected a large, fine house, for those days, more like a fort than a dwelling, in old English style with wine cellars, etc.

No family in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania was more prominent for patriotism and military ardor than the four sons of James Johnston, who came from the north of Ireland and settled in Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

He settled in Antrim township, near Shady Grove, about 1735.

General Notes: Wife - Nancy Walpole

The inclusion of this person here is rather speculative. She is given as the mother of Maj. John Johnston in only the source given. Every other source lists only one wife for Col. James Johnston and lists Maj. John as her son.
