General Notes: Husband - Francis Mortimer Johnston

He grew up in Wilkins township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, receiving his education in the local schools. In youth and early manhood he assisted his father in the management of the homestead farm, becoming a skilled agriculturist. Later, upon the death of his father, he inherited the estate, which he cultivated until about 1887. In that year he sold the property and moved to East Liberty, Pittsburgh, where he was for a few years engaged in the hardware business, after which he became associated in the capacity of treasurer with the Keystone Paint & Color Company. In 1902 he sold his interest in that concern and embarked in the real estate business.
In 1904 he was appointed county ward assessor to finish an uncompleted term. When the board of assessment and revision of taxes was organized he was elected assessor for the Nineteenth ward of Pittsburgh for a term of three years. In the sphere of politics he staunchly supported the principles and interests of the Republican party. He was a member of the Sixth United Presbyterian church of Pittsburgh.
