He was a graduate of Hamilton College and shortly after graduation joined a party of "gold seekers" and spent a few years in California. He was successful in his quest and returned with sufficient gold to finance a mercantile venture and a lumbering enterprise. He was successful in business and held a high position in the commercial world of his day.
