He received a common-school education, and learned the carpenter's trade when he was eighteen years old. Ten years later he came to Verona, Pennsylvania, and for two years was employed in the Allegheny Valley rail-road shops; he then began housebuilding, and in 1882, in partnership with Mr. Miligan, he began contracting.
