General Notes: Husband - Samuel Shields

He learned the trade of tanner, and from his youth up devoted himself continuously to the tannery and agricultural labors. During the Civil war he held the rank of sergeant in Company K, One Hundred and Sixty-eighth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and when Newberne, North Carolina, was attacked from the opposite side of the Neuces river, his regiment was called to the firing line. Shells from gunboats, however, dislodged the enemy and the affair was soon over. Mr. Shields also served in the vicinity of Gettysburg at the time of the battle there. He completed his term of enlistment and received an honorable discharge.
On the occasion of his father's death, he removed to Delmont, where he led a retired life. The Shields homestead was the oldest home in Delmont. Mr. Shields owned a farm of one hundred and seventy acres near Delmont, on which he had a tenant. The farm had long been in the possession of the family, and the care of this farm and his property in town furnished Mr. Shields with sufficient occupation in his retirement.
