The ancestry of this family dates back to County Cavan, Ireland.
He landed with his family in America in 1787. He came from Baltimore, Maryland, by wagon and settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania, near Brownsville, where he purchased a farm of forty acres, upon which he lived until his death.
He was the father of eight children.
