He was born in England, and was a blacksmith by trade, following that calling until obliged to give up active work because of advanced age. When he crossed the Atlantic he located at St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, later moving to Walkerton, Ontario, where he died when ninety-four years old. Originally he was a member of the Church of England, later affiliating with the Methodist denomination. He was twice married, and by his first wife, had six sons and two daughters. By the second wife, there were four sons and one daughter.
