He was of Scotch-Irish descent and lived in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on a large farm. He was an active citizen and took much interest in the affairs of the county, siding with the Democratic party in all important questions. He was a member of the Roundhill Presbyterian Church, as was his wife.
