He was born on the family homestead, and lived with his father until he was twenty-five years old, assisting him in the mangement of the farm. After his marriage he built a house on part of the homestead and farmed his father's place on the shares for three or four years. He then removed to Highland, Union County, Iowa, where he lived thereafter, following his occupation, that of a farmer.
