He completed the course of study offered in the common schools near the family homestead, and in 1885 entered the commercial college at Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he was graduated in 1890. Soon afterward he learned the jeweler's trade with L. M. Wallace, of Ogden, Utah, and he then engaged in business at Berwick, Pennsylvania.
