General Notes: Husband - Joseph Irwin

The progenitor of this family in America was Joseph, a civil engineer, and a native of Scotland. He settled in White Oak Levels, Pennsylvania, in 1767, and three years later returned to his native country to bring his family and that of his brother-in-law. During his absence the settlers were driven off by the Indians to the vicinity of Fort Duquesne for protection. The Irwins located in Mifflin township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
When he died, he left three sons and two daughters. His estate was inherited by his sons, James and John, who farmed and died on the homestead.

He was twice driven back by Indians from his settlement in western Pennsylvania.
