When a young man he was under the instruction of Rev. Elisha D. Barrett for some time, thus fitting himself for teaching which occupied his attention for several winters. He was chiefly a farmer. He filled several township offices, and was elected elder of the Glade Run church in June, 1839, and held that position for many years.
