He was reared on the farm, attended the "old log school-house" and the Greersburg Academy, and followed farming as a business. He owned 160 acres of land, nearly all of which was under cultivation. He held various township offices, including school director. He was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church; in politics he was a Republican.

He and his wife had seven children; five were still living in 1888.
