General Notes: Husband - John Woodburn

He was the eldest son, but gave up his right of primogeniture to fulfill a long cherished ambition to come to the United States. His family at first opposed his coming, but when the fact developed that he had funds of his own to pay his passage and was willing to renounce his right of inheritance, they freely gave consent. The exact date of his coming to this country is not known, but it was between the years 1825 and 1832. He settled first in Philadelphia, but soon removed to western Pennsylvania, settling in Westmoreland County, where he kept a small store situated on the Greensburg turnpike not far from the city of Greensburg. Here he prospered and gained a good knowledge of merchandising. Selling out his Westmoreland store he moved to Slate Lick, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in the dry goods business with a Mr. Horner, who proved to be a rascal. It was the custom for one of the partners to go east once a year to purchase goods for the store, carrying with him a large sum of money. Horner laid his plans, and when his turn came to go east he failed to return. This so crippled his resources that Mr. Woodburn was obliged to retire from business. Later he removed to Freeport, Pennsylvania, where he again engaged in the dry goods business. There better fortune awaited him. He prospered and at his death left an estate valued at twenty thousand dollars, a very respectable fortune for that early day. He was a strict Presbyterian in religious faith and elder many years, and a man of unquestioned integrity. [GPHAV, 464]
