He received his early edu­cation in the public schools, then went to work as a lumberman and later became interested in the oil-fields, eventually having interests in thirty oil-producing wells. He was a stockholder in the Keystone Mutual Oil and Gas Company, and was also in­terested in the wholesale and retail hardware business in Kane, Pennsylvania, and the Fal­coner Mirror Company, at Falconer, New York. He was a Republican in politics, and a Presbyterian in religion. He was a member of Jenks Lodge, No. 250, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in Marionville, Pennsylvania.
