He completed his education in the schools of the home district, and, at the age of twenty-two years, engaged in teaching. He taught for three terms, but later became a farmer.
He was a life-long and enthusiastic Democrat. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian Church, at Newville, Pennsylvania.
