He was also born in Germany, and was eight years old when his parents brought him to America. At the age of sixteen he went into the Civil War as a drummer boy from Cleveland, Ohio, and served all through that conflict without a scratch, and now (1925) at the age of seventy-eight, is hale and hearty.
