He was born June 14. [TV, 280]
He became a farmer, and about 1840 settled in Cranberry Township, Venango County, PA, where in addition to farming he had a mill for some time, and he drilled a few oil wells on his property. During his early manhood he was engaged in lumbering and rafting for some years. Being a man of intelligence and advanced ideas on questions of public importance, he was called upon to assist in the administration of the local government, serving as school director and for over twenty years as road commissioner, and discharged his duties ably and conscientiously.
