General Notes: Husband - Eugene Emmerson Hughes

He received his early education in the public schools of his native town of Franklin, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating from the High School there at the age of seventeen years, he secured a position with the Pittsburgh & Western Railroad, and worked for about three years in the treasurer's office of that corporation. At the close of this period he secured a position with the concern of Armour & Company and thus began an association which continued for quite a number of years. He worked for a time as cashier in the South Side office of this concern in Pittsburgh, and was then sent to Greensburg as a salesman. Here he was so successful that in the year 1897 he was appointed manager of the branch office existing in that city and held that position for twenty years or more.
Mr. Hughes was active in the general affairs of the community and was a well known figure in social and religious life. He was a Republican in politics, but in no sense of the term was he a politician nor did he seek for political preferment or public office of any kind. He was a devoted member of the United Brethren church, and served on its official board and its executive committee, and was actively identified with the work of the Sunday school. Mr. Hughes was a member of the United Commercial Travelers' Association. He was also a patron of all outdoor sports and pastimes, and he was an athlete of considerable ability.
