He was born on the family homestead in Jackson Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and attended the log school-house of that period. He learned the stone-mason trade, which he followed for a number of years, and after the death of his father he and his sister, Elizabeth, lived on the homestead for many years, and after her death he, being unmarried, made his home with his brother David.
