He acquired his primary education in the common schools, and supplemented it by study in a seminary, and in the Centre County Normal. He remained on the home farm until seventeen years of age, and then donned the blue in defense of his country, in the Civil war, enlisting in Company I, 98th P. V. I. He was in active service for three and a half months, and upon receiving his discharge returned to his home where he again entered school. In a short time, however, he turned his attention to teaching, and followed that profession for five terms. During this time he was reading medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Joseph Holloway and Dr. Dorsworth. In 1875 he was graduated in the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, and at once came to Beech Creek, Pennsylvania, where he opened an office. He established a lucrative practice, and in his professional work was very successful. Beginning in 1893 he served as a member of the board of pension examiners of Clinton County.
