Civil War: 57th Regiment, Company I.

Henry C. Smith's Letter, Camp Nolin, Kentucky, November 12, 1861:
Dear Friends at Home:
After having said our good-byes at home and spent a few weeks in camp in Armstrong County, we left for Pittsburgh on the 14th of October. All things being in readiness, we struck our tents and marched to the Monongahela wharf and embarked on six large Ohio boats that were to convey us to Louisville, Kentucky.
All being aboard about 7 o'clock in the evening, the planks were drawn in and pushed off in regular line, and we took our departure for the "Sunny South."
The shore was thronged with citizens who came to witness our departure, and ten thousand voices rent the air. Hurrah, for the Union. Hurrah, for Pennsylvania, ascended and echoed from hill to hill, as we steamed down the beautiful river.
The weather was fine and the scenery was delightful. Agreeable and most pleasant salutations were received at every place we stopped. The "Stars and Stripes" were afloat in every village on the Virginia and Kentucky shores.
On the evening of the 21st, we landed at Louisville and took the cars for this place on the 24th. We were in a rebel settlement and within two days' march of the rebel encampment composed of 35,000 men under Gen. Buckner. We have about 40,000 and more coming in every day.
I was sent to the hospital on the sick list a few days ago. The partiotic ladies of Louisville came to see me every day, bringing chicken and other delicacies which I desired. They treated me like a brother. May God bless them and hasten the time when it will not be necessary for them to administer to a soldier's wants.
It is indeed enough to awaken the sympathy of any one to visit the hospital where the sick and wounded lie; some burning with fever, others suffering from wounds received from the enemy; here a groan, there a sigh. Although we suffer some privations, we do it cheerfully, and are willing, if need be, to shed our hearts' blood for our beloved country.
