General Notes: Husband - John Nelson Hovis

He was born on the old homestead, where his early life was also spent and he received his education in the township schools, and followed the carpenter trade for some years. In 1878 he entered the employ of Phillips Brothers, and in 1882, in connection with Hosea Beighlea, he purchased a well located on the Vanderlin farm, two on the Daugherty farm, and one upon the Surrenna farm, from Phillips Brothers. In 1884 his partner died, and the widow sold his interest to O. B. Cross, and in partnership with him Mr. Hovis thereafter carried on operations. He was also connected with Hollister & Cummings in other wells. Mr. Hovis was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and in politics a Republican. [HVC 1890, 992]
