He traveled during school and college vacations the entire chain of the lakes between the head of Lake Superior and Quebec, through the southern and western states and part of Mexico, across the Rocky Mountains and north to British Columbia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in the class of 1878. Then made a tour of Europe, the region of the Nile and Palestine, returned to Italy via Turkey in Europe, and died in Rome in June, 1879, just as he reached his twenty-first year.
