He owned a farm of two hundred and thirty acres at Port Royal, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and owned and operated a grist-mill and distillery.

Joseph D. Hough was the second of five children born to Daniel Hough and Ruth Stemm.
Of twelve children born to Daniel Hough nine were living in 1890. All are listed here as offspring of his first wife: it is not known which children were born to which wife.
