He was born on the old homestead of his father and grandfather, near Imperial, Findlay township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He held various local offices of trust in his township. In 1859 he was elected representative to the legislature of Pennsylvania on the republican ticket. He was a leading farmer and citizen.
