General Notes: Husband - Robert Freeman Hopwood

He was educated in the Uniontown, Pennsylvania, schools, and at the age of twenty entered the law office of Charles E. Boyle, one of the most noted lawyers of the state, a friend of President Cleveland, who appointed him Chief Justice of Washington Territory after his service in Congress. In 1879 Mr. Hopwood was admitted to the bar and began a general practice. He was elected attorney for Uniontown in April, 1882, and held that office for many years. In politics, Mr. Hopwood was an active Republican; as early as 1883-84 he served as chairman of the Republican County Committee and was for several years secretary of the same committee. In 1886 he was the Republican candidate for district attorney, but lost by a margin of 45 out of 12,000 votes; and from 1894 to 1912, a period of eighteen years, he served as county solicitor. He was elected to represent the district in Congress, and while in the House of Representatives served on the important committees on Revision of Laws, War Claims, and Postoffice Expenditures. Mr. Hopwood was intimately identified in many ways with the development of Uniontown. He was a moving spirit in establishing the natural gas works at Uniontown and sold four-fifths of the stock for the company.
Fraternally, he was affiliated with Uniontown Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; Fayette Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; and Pittsburgh Commandery, Knights Templar; and he was a member of the Uniontown Country Club, and of the Columbia Country Club of Washington, District of Columbia. His religious connections were with the Asbury Methodist Church.
