General Notes: Husband - Robert Acheson Hope
He was reared and educated in the vicinity of his birthplace. At the age of eighteen he commenced to teach in the common schools and followed this occupation for four years. He was afterward engaged in the mercantile business, and for a number of years was employed on the Pennsylvania railroad as station agent. In 1864 he entered the employ of the Penn Gas Coal Company, as assistant superintendent, which position he held for over seventeen years. He was afterwards superintendent of the United Coal and Coke Company, and still later of the Westmoreland County Coal and Coke Company. For some ten years or more he then devoted his whole attention to farming on his farm in Penn township, Westmoreland County. For fifteen years he served as justice of the peace, filled the office of school director for a number of years, and was prothonotary of Westmoreland county from January, 1892, to January, 1895. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and a staunch adherent of the principles of Republicanism.
