He and his brothers, Daniel and Thomas, settled on 630 acres in Goshen, Chester County, Pennsylvania, including the northwestern quarter of the borough of West Chester. Their father bought the land and divided it between them. John built a residence, later owned by Jesse J. Taylor, about 1732.
