General Notes: Husband - John Stevenson

He built the first mill at Moon, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1836, and at his death, he and his sons owned and operated four steam grist- and saw-mills. He was also a large landowner, was justice of the peace for over forty years, and was also postmaster a number of years. [HAC 1889 II, 480]

He married and settled in Moon township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he later died. [HBC 1888, 892]

He was born, lived and died in Findlay township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and became a conspicuous figure in the community. Tall and raw-boned, he was an indefatigable worker and possessed of a keen business sense, so that his affairs uniformly prospered, and he came to be a man of substance and possessed of so large a tract of land that he was able to leave a large farm to each of his six sons. He was also the owner of three mills, one at Clinton, Pennsylvania, one at Frankfort Springs, Beaver County, and a large one at Moon, Allegheny County. The business which he did at these mills was of such volume that he was obliged to keep four teams of horses continually on the road hauling flour into Pittsburgh. [GPHWP, 187]

He was of Maryland, later of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. [GPHBC, 762]

He came from Pigeon Creek, Washington County, Pennsylvania, about 1800. Whether he was a native of that county or of the north of Ireland is not positively known. [P&HP iii, 322]

By trade he was a miller, and built the first grist mill in his section of the country. He was influenced to settle where he did by Phillip Hooper, who was a prior settler in Allegheny County, and whose daughter he afterward married. He was a very successful mill operator and later built and operated three other mills in western Pennsylvania, which were run by his sons, each of whom he taught the miller's trade in a most thorough manner. The original "Stevenson Mills" were burned in 1856, but were soon thereafter rebuilt, and were still in operation into the twentieth century. John Stevenson also became an extensive land owner, and gave each of his sons a good farm as their portion of his estate. He had three daughters, for whom he also provided well.
For many years Mr. Stevenson was a justice of the peace in his county and well known as a local politician and man of great firmness of character.
