He was reared on the homestead farm; received his early education at the common schools of the township; completed his education at New Brighton College, and after graduating engaged in farming until 1883, when he located at Sharpsville, PA, and engaged in the livery business. In 1866 he was elected burgess of Sharpsville, and re-elected in 1887. He was a member of the A. O. U. W., No. 127, of Sharpsville, also of the K. of P.
