He was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania, and emigrated to Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1824, where he engaged in teaching school for several years. Afterward he engaged in the mercantile business.

His first wife died when their children were very young; he afterward married her sister who proved to be a mother indeed to her sister's children, and on their part they ever affectionately venerated her as a mother.
