He was born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, about 1810. [GPHAV, 901]
He was born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, moved to Venango County with his father and there married. He was an oil contractor in his earlier business life and one of the largest in the oil field. He later bought a farm near Oil City and there lived until his death.

He obtained a common school education, and was reared on a farm. His parents came to Venango County in 1843, and located on the farm where Joseph Hogue later resided.
