He was born on the homestead farm near West Monterey, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and lived there all his life. He attended the district school and spent his early life engaged in farming. He became quite prosperous and owned a line of boats employed in carrying coal, oil and general freight on the Allegheny river. He was a Republican in politics and an official member of the Methodist Episcopal church, taking a deep interest in its work, and being largely instrumental in the erection of the new church building at Monterey.
