General Notes: Husband - William Hodges

He was a native of Canada. [BOB37JD, 183]

He was born at Freedom, New York, and in 1821 came to Warren County, Pennsylvania, becoming the owner of the Whitmor farm, below North Warren. After remaining a short time he went, influenced by his proclivities as a speculator, to Pittsburgh, but returned to Warren in the summer of 1826. The following summer he accepted a contract to build the Warren County court house, agreeing to take payment partly in county orders, and partly in county lands which were valued at twenty-five cents per acre, an agreement which gave him upwards of seven thousand acres and formed an unbroken line from Warren borough to the state line north. Shortly after entering upon the work he was joined by his son, Walter Wood Hodges, and later by the entire family, which moved to Warren from Freedom, New York. Their home was on the site later occupied by the beautiful residence of Mr. A. J. Hazeltine, one of the finest situations which the city later afforded. Mr. Hodges became prominently identified with the affairs of the county and was a man universally respected, his advice and opinion in regard to matters of importance being frequently solicited.

He was born in Canada, and migrated with his two sons to Pennsylvania, settling in Pittsburgh. In 1813 he removed to Warren County, and obtained the contract for building the first court house in that county. He received in compensation $1,200 in money and 2,000 acres of land, extending from Warren to Kinzua, a tract which now comprises Glade and Elk townships. [GPHAV, 923]
