His parents were among the early settlers of Washington township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. He was reared in his native township, and followed distilling and farming.

was born in Washington Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and there reared to manhood. After his marriage he moved to Marion Township, and about the year 1866 purchased a farm in Franklin Township. He lived on that place a number of years, then leaving the place under the care of his oldest son, Robert, moved onto the farm he owned in Washington Township.
