The old homestead of his father, Samuel, was divided into three farms, the property of his sons, P. Lyman, M. Luther, and William P. In 1887 they established a brick and tile yard on the old farm, which rapidly developed into a lucrative business, being the only one of its kind in Washington township of Butler County.
