He was born in Ireland, and in early manhood settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, afterwards moving to Butler County. He settled in Venango Township fully 125 years ago [1909] and endured the privations and hardships that fell to the lot of the venturesome settlers in that section at that period.

He served in the Revolutionary War.
