About 1760, his father moved the family to a place near Germantown, now North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1774 the two older sons in this family, William and Jacob, decided to go west, and early in May, 1774, arrived in what is now Indiana County, Pennsylvania, near the site where Shelocta borough was later located.
William later went on into what is now Armstrong County, and located near the mouth of Mahoning creek.
