General Notes: Husband - Rev. Oliver Gans Hertzog

His ancestors on his father's side came from Holland to Maryland before the Revolution. On his mother's side he traced his ancestry to George Baltzer Gans, who came from Germany to Philadelphia in 1719.

He began teaching at twenty years of age, and was educated at the State Normal School, California, Pennsylvania, and Bethany College, West Virginia. He was baptized into the Baptist church at sixteen years of age, united with the Disciples of Christ at twenty-one, and entered upon the work of the ministry at twenty-five. He served and built churches in many places in New York and Canada, and September 1, 1891, became financial secretary of Hiram College, Ohio, and resigned to work with the missionary board of the church, and later retired.
